Founded

In 1976, The Arizona Historical Advisory Commission (AHAC) was established, authorized through Arizona Revised Statutes 41-1352, under the Arizona State Library, Archives and Public Records (ASLAPR).

The commission membership, appointed by the Director of Library and Archives, consists of experts in the field of historic preservation in the disciplines of history , arts and culture, architecture and archaeology, professional librarians and archivists or persons otherwise associated with the interpretation, research, writing, preservation or teaching of this state’s heritage, including the Indian Nation’s history and heritage and the Director of the Historical Society, the Director of the State Museum, the Director of the State Parks Board, and the State Historic Preservation Officer.

On February 14, 2005, Statehood Day, Governor Janet Napolitano signed into law Chapter One, Senate Bill 1065, extending the Commission’s duties to develop and coordinate a statewide plan regarding the state’s centennial, which occurs in 2012. n 2007, Senate Bill 1433 increased membership from twenty to twenty-five and added two statutory members: Arizona State Office of Tourism and the Superintendent of Public Instruction.

Membership

Membership consists of not less than ten nor more than twenty-five members who are experts in the disciplines of history, arts and culture, architecture and archaeology, as well as professional librarians and archivists or persons who are associated with the interpretation, research, writing, preservation or teaching of this state’s heritage. Members are appointed by the Director of the Arizona State Library, Archives and Public Records. Statutory members consist of the Director of the Arizona State Library, Archives and Public Records, Director of the Historical Society, the Director of the State Museum, the Director of the Arizona Office of Tourism, the Director of the State Parks Board, the State Historic Preservation Officer and the Superintendent of Public Instruction or their designees.
