Salute Arizona's Fallen
Under the direction of Secretary of State Ken Bennett and the Guns to Salute the Fallen Committee, the concept for a memorial to honor servicemen and women who died during WWII was developed in 2011. Now in the design phase, the memorial, which will be unveiled at the State Capitol, Wesley Bolin Plaza on December 7, 2013, presents historic gun barrels from the USS Arizona and USS Missouri as a representation of the beginning and end of World War II. As a special honor, between the barrels, a steel structure in the shape of the USS Arizona's hull will display the names of Arizona's servicemen and women who died during WWII. The proposed list of names is available for review at www.azcentennial.gov/documents/pdf/WWIIMemorialNames.pdf.
The Guns to Salute the Fallen www.GunsToSaluteTheFallen.com Committee seeks the public’s assistance in ensuring the accuracy of the names to be listed on the memorial. We ask that you check the spelling of the current names listed and if a name of a serviceman or woman who died in WWII, AND resided in Arizona at time of induction into military service, does not appear on the list, it is possible that the name may be added.
Now through August 31, 2013, a special committee of the Arizona Historical Advisory Commission will review requests for corrections or additions of names listed on the memorial. It is important to note that the current list of names is a compilation of public information records accessed from the Department of Defense and branches of the military.
Request forms for corrections and additions to the names listed on the Guns to Salute the Fallen Memorial are available by following the links below. Please fill the form(s) out online, print and mail to the address at the bottom of the form.
If your relative is not listed, resided in Arizona at the time of induction into military service and died in WW II, please request inclusion on the memorial.
If your relative is listed but the information is incorrect, please request a correction.
Thank you!
